What is Thin Film? Presented by Filmetrics
Filmetrics, the world's sales leader in Thin-Film Thickness Measurement, approached FableVision to create several animated videos that would help convey the intricacies of their business to a wide audience. The goal was to make a series of animated pieces that would be instructive, fun and could relay important information.
The FableVision team and Filmetrics brainstormed to come up with the creative conceit of an animated piece in the tone of 1950s educational science videos.

First Solar ($FSLR) Expands European Footprint with Acquisition of Thin Film Company Evolar
First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR), a leading American solar technology company, has acquired Evolar AB, a European leader in photovoltaic technology.
The deal, valued at around $38 million, with an additional $42 million contingent upon future technical milestones, aims to accelerate the development of high-efficiency tandem devices by integrating Evolar's expertise with First Solar's research and development capabilities. Evolar's research facility in Uppsala, Sweden, will continue its activities, marking First Solar's first R&D facility in Europe. Around 30 of Evolar's R&D staff will join First Solar, collaborating with the company's scientists in California and Ohio.

Photovoltaics, particularly thin film solar cells, are anticipated to significantly contribute to the sustainable energy supply of the future. In this regard, complex semiconductors such as Cu(In,Ga)Se2 or Cu2Zn(Sn,Ge)Se4 are being increasingly utilized and investigated as absorber materials in thin film solar cells due to their capacity for specific tailoring of material properties by adjusting alloy composition. Photovoltaics, particularly thin film solar cells, are anticipated to significantly contribute to the sustainable energy supply of the future. In this regard, complex semiconductors such as Cu(In,Ga)Se2 or Cu2Zn(Sn,Ge)Se4 are being increasingly utilized and investigated as absorber materials in thin film solar cells due to their capacity for specific tailoring of material properties by adjusting alloy composition. Nonetheless, this complexity also results in intrinsic structural inhomogeneity at the subnanometer scale, as two different types of atoms are situated on a specific site of the crystal structure. Consequently, the local atomic arrangements in these semiconductor alloys often differ from the average crystal structure, and this deviation significantly affects critical material properties, including the band gap energy.
To address this issue, we employed Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy to identify element-specific bond lengths of complex semiconductors such as Cu(In,Ga)Se2 or Cu2Zn(Sn,Ge)Se4. Based on these outcomes, we modelled the atomic displacements of the various local configurations and assessed their impact on the band gap energy using ab initio theoretical calculations. Our findings contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the intricate relationship between composition, structure, and properties of semiconductor alloys and enable the realization of their complete technological potential.
